Rugby League was first played in Sydney, Australia, during 1907. It expanded rapidly to Queensland and the ACT. In 1909, the sport was played in Brisbane. There are a few levels of competition in Australia. They include the NRL competition, which is the most elite, the Queensland Cup, the New South Wales Cup and the Bundaberg cup. During the mid 1990’s, the Super League War broke out. This occurred over disputes over broadcasting rights. After the war, a few teams were cut, and the national rugby league was formed in 1997. The national rugby league is still in effect today, with all the elite clubs part of the competition. In 2008, Rugby League celebrated it’ 100th birthday, or centenary year.
Today, Rugby League is the most watched sport on Australia television. It has the highest number of audiences, for events such as State of Origin.
